Teaching

Teaching:

I am currently offering both online lessons and in person lessons. Online lessons are taught over Zoom, and in person lessons will eventually be held in the Washington, D.C. area. Please email me at nick.thompson121@gmail.com to inquire about my lesson rates and studio availability.

Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching is practical in that I focus on building clarinet fundamentals, musicianship and practice techniques early on with my students, as this allows them to go beyond the basic challenges of the music they are working on and reach a deeper understanding of it. Throughout my time working with them I also help to develop their ability to teach themselves independently so that they can become successful performers and teachers in the future.

Lesson Content:

Every lesson will begin with working on clarinet fundamentals (tone, technique, articulation, proper air usage, posture). I talk with the student so that they understand the basic concepts of all of these clarinet fundamentals, and we then apply these concepts through various exercises such as long tones, technique and articulation patterns, etudes and solo repertoire. I also enjoy helping students with music they are working on for upcoming performances, whether it is for middle/high school band, youth orchestra, church services; or if it is audition music for All-State band/orchestra, undergraduate music auditions, etc.

Required Materials:

- Clarinet in good working condition, mouthpiece, reeds (more than just 3), ligature, music as assigned, metronome (either a physical one or an app is fine)
- If you have any questions about buying new equipment or where to get your clarinet repaired, please ask me first as I have many recommendations!
